The pearl industry was once the most important activity in the United Arab Emirates and was tightly woven into the Arabian gulf culture that dates back around 7,000 years. Pearling was an entirely integrated social system, which has left a rich heritage of traditions. ILLUSION is an optical effect created by the engineered tension between rope lines and frame. Dubai’s long-lasting pearling tradition is revisited, using the material’s splendor in a sleek visual design to create a unique seating object that invokes visual memories of dynamic city life. ILLUSION Pearl seat will be made using cultured pearls that are locally produced by the Emirati Company ‘RAK Pearls’. More than 9000 cultured pearls in ninety meters of chain will be used to weave the timber frame of the seat.
