Duel Stool

LIMITED

By Polina Miliou

Description

To create the whimsical unique objects seen at KYKLOS collection, Polina Miliou first scouts local flea markets for used furniture, particularly traditional Greek wicker chairs, which she then sculpts by hand in a freeform, improvisational way using a mixture of paper pulp the artist makes herself. Pigment is mixed into the pulp as well (the objects are not painted over), in order to achieve a bright, solid, and durable effect. Each colour vibrates with its own energy, and is referencing the Cycladic sky at different times of the day. The cycle of the sun thus becomes part of the fluid geometric theme the artist has set up for this exhibition.

Polina Miliou

Athens, Greece

Polina Miliou (b. 1990 Athens, Greece) is a designer and sculptor who creates handmade furniture that embrace color, spontaneity and gestural expression. She often subverts and upcycles humble materials like paper, expanded polystyrene foam and found objects, transforming them into functional art pieces. In her recent work she revisits and adapts traditional furniture by twisting their existing character into playful, monolithic shapes that project forms of primitivism and anonymous art and architecture. She has studied Architecture Engineering in National Technical University of Athens, and has worked in various design studios in Los Angeles.

In 2020 she participated in Sundance Film Festival as a production designer for the performance Anti-Gone by artist Theo Triantafyllidis. She lives and works between Athens, Greece and Los Angeles, US.

Major Museum Exhibition
Works presented at the Benaki Museum (Athens), India Mahdavi Project Room (Paris), Art Athina, and Collectible Fair (Brussels). She had a solo exhibition at Carwan Gallery in Athens in 2022
