Theodore Psychoyos | Raw Objects
Polidefkous 39, Piraeus, at Carwan Gallery Athens | April 20th – May 21st, 2022
Carwan Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition Raw Objects, featuring a new collection of functional objects by visual artist Theodore Psychoyos. The exhibition will run at the gallery’s space in Piraeus from 20 April to 21 May 2022. The idea for a series of functional objects first was born while the artist was building his own home on the island of Naxos. This was the beginning of an ongoing exploration, inspired by the natural elements and the forms of unprocessed stone that are scattered around the island.
To create the pieces in the collection, Psychoyos uses found pieces of marble that have been abandoned in warehouses and quarries, which were discarded and bear on them the marks of the human hand, machinery, and the elements. These randomly cut and shaped stone fragments the artist selects for their shape and texture, and then reimagines as furniture, giving new life to ancient stones that have lain unused for decades. Because they’re so old, most of these marbles are very rare and impossible to find on the market otherwise.
