ROBERTO SIRONI ENCODED SYMBOLS | RUINS

POLIDEFKOUS 39, PIRAEUS AT CARWAN GALLERY ATHENS | June 3rd, 2021 - August 28th, 2021

Carwan Gallery, in collaboration with IN Residence and Fonderia Artistica Battaglia, is pleased to present RUINS, a body of work by Roberto Sironi. The project, developed since 2017 and the result of four years of research, is enriched by a series of new works that complete the collection.

Ruins features a series of works that re-signify architectural fragments belonging to different historical periods and which refer to the most significant archaeological sites placed in the Mediterranean basin. The project relates some constructive elements of the classical era as bases of columns, capitals, sections of amphitheatre with rudiments of the industrial era, such as the double-T beams, reticular structural elements and corrugated sheet metal, which are reshaped according to a new aesthetic perspective. The collection is conceived as a series of contemporary ruins, freely deconstructed and reconstructed, imaginary simulacra, programmed artifices where the materials and techniques of execution do not correspond to the original but rather become functional to the postarchaeological message conveyed, transmitting a feeling of “Indefinite time” that becomes hypothetical, evanescent, suspended.

Roberto Sironi got the opportunity to develop RUINS thanks to the selection of the international residency program IN Residence Design, curated by Barbara Brondi and Marco Rainò and to produce the works with bronze experts Fonderia Artistica Battaglia and Simone Desirò, Marmi Artificiali di Rima. The project is also illustrated by a monographic publication curated by Barbara Brondi and Marco Rainò and published by NERO Editions, 2020.

Roberto Sironi (1983) is an Italian designer, who lives and works in Milan. His design practice is defined by a research-based and process-oriented approach, where thinking and making converge in the creation of artifacts, which are considered narrative tools to trigger a dialogue with the user. This approach materializes through a body of work that breaks with the primary function by blurring the boundary between functional object and sculpture; the artifacts produced are the result of a process in which the subjects addressed are investigated through an in-depth analysis from a historical, geographical and anthropological point of view.

The works are conceived as contemporary ultra-signs, where the transformation processes re-signify the matter, revealing its unseen qualities and giving it new features.The practice, founded in 2015, embraces different types of design practices, such as product and installation design, strategic research and design consultancy, through the collaboration with institutions, galleries and companies. Roberto Sironi also combines his practice with teaching and research activity in the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano, where his studies focus on new technologies for design.

Works have been presented internationally, with exhibitions at Triennale Design Museum and as part of the Triennale's travelling exhibition in New Delhi and Buenos Aires . A monograph on his work, Encoded Symbols, was published in 2020
