Assembly | Sigve Knutson
Polidefkous 39, Piraeus, at Carwan Gallery Athens | November 4th 2021 - January 9th 2022
Working intuitively with hands-on techniques and a wide range of materials, young Norwegian designer Sigve Knutson creates objects that question contemporary mass-produced design. After presenting the critically acclaimed solo project Drawn to Production with Carwan Gallery during Milan Design Week in 2017, Knutson presents a new solo show at the gallery with works created in the past five years — including new objects inspired by the local context of Piraeus and created specially for the exhibition.
Entitled Assembly, the exhibition explores the freehand, improvisatory approach that is part of Knutson’s practice, which is often driven by the pure joy of putting things together without planning or designing anything in advance. Each object he creates is unique and results from a process led by experimentation and an intuitive use of tools, to create archetypal forms that, in the designer’s own words, display different “gradients of functionality”. Abstract wood columns thus coexist in his work with playfully stacked shelves, hand-moulded forms, cast-metal seats and geometric sculptures.

Sigve Knutson
Oslo, Norway
Sigve Knutson (b. 1991, Norway) is an experimental designer based in between Oslo and Eindhoven. He obtained an MA in Contextual Design at Design Academy Eindhoven in 2016. His practice is motivated by a drawing mentality and a fascination for the intuitive and playful rather than the smoothened and planned. Through a series of methods and material combinations that allows for intuition and spontaneous actions, he aims to make his objects in the same free way as he would make a drawing.
Sigve Knutson explores materials and techniques that share the same qualities as his drawings. Hammering metal is a way to shape a flat sheet of any metal, he was interested in the act of using force to make something flat into a volume and using an outline as a mold to control the shape of the volume. Traces of the production become the surface of the objects as each piece is hand-hammered into its shape.
